The MidAtlantic Women in Agriculture program hosted its 2024 annual Fall Farm Tour on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The group visited farms in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County, providing participants with a unique opportunity to explore some of the region's most inspiring farm businesses.

The tour, which included over 40 participants from locations across Maryland and Delaware, began at Greenstreet Gardens, a family-owned business in Lothian, Md., celebrated for its expansive greenhouse operation and vibrant garden center. Ray and Stacy Greenstreet purchased the business in June 2000 with a vision of providing top-quality plants and exceptional customer service.

What started as a rooting station for the Ball Seed Company has grown into a thriving enterprise with two locations and various seasonal attractions, including a popular fall corn maze. Greenstreet Gardens is a destination for both novice and experienced gardeners, offering an extensive selection of annuals, perennials, unique gifts, home decor, and expert landscaping services. The owners' passion for horticulture and a strong commitment to sustainability ensures many eco-friendly plant options.

During the tour, attendees were introduced to the nursery's sustainable practices and had the opportunity to explore the expansive 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art greenhouse. Visitors also enjoyed shopping in the garden center and wandering through beautifully maintained gardens.

Next, the group visited Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards, a scenic family farm in Maryland known for its beautiful rolling hills and award-winning wines. Susan Watson White (Owner and Operator) and Shelby Watson-Hampton (Partner and Marketing Director) shared the history and highlights of the operation. Originally a tobacco farm purchased in 1955, the Watson family transformed the property into a thriving nursery before transitioning into viticulture in 2014. Today, Robin Hill produces various wines that reflect the region's rich soil, perfect for grape growing.

During the tour, participants enjoyed lunch while learning about the farm’s journey from traditional agriculture to becoming a premier vineyard and events venue. Guests had the opportunity to explore the scenic grounds, sample the wines, and hear about the farm’s wedding venue. Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards have earned numerous accolades, including "Best Winery in Maryland" at the New York International Wine Competition in both 2019 and 2021, and multiple gold medals at the Maryland Governor’s Cup for standout wines like Legacy, Pi’Goat Blanc, and Home Sweet Home.

The final stop on the tour was Montpelier Farms, a family-owned farm park in Upper Marlboro, Md., offering seasonal activities that attract visitors of all ages. Established in 2008 by Mike and Adrianne Dunn, the farm started with a corn maze, pumpkin patch, and hayrides. Over time, it has expanded into a bustling fall destination, adding attractions to accommodate growing crowds. After Mike’s passing in 2015, Adrianne continued to build on his vision, making Montpelier Farms a favorite local tradition.

During the visit, attendees explored the farm’s popular corn maze and pumpkin patch, and enjoyed Montpelier’s signature apple cider donuts and slushies—fall favorites. The farm also offers playgrounds, animal exhibits, and educational displays, providing a fun, family-friendly experience while staying true to its roots as a working farm.

The Fall Farm Tour was a great success, providing participants with valuable insights into the region's agricultural industry. MidAtlantic Women in Agriculture is dedicated to providing knowledge and resources to women who share a passion for agriculture. Farm tours enable women to stay engaged, educated, and empowered.
