About University of Maryland Extension in Baltimore City

At University of Maryland Extension (UME) in Baltimore City, we are dedicated to empowering communities, fostering sustainable growth, and improving the quality of life for all Maryland residents. Rooted in research-based knowledge from the University of Maryland, UME has long been a trusted resource for educational programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of Baltimore City’s diverse urban communities. Through a comprehensive range of programmatic areas, we seek to support the health, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability of Baltimore residents and their neighborhoods.

Our Programmatic Areas

Our work spans several programmatic areas tailored to the needs of Baltimore City:

1. Urban Agriculture and Food Access
Our urban agriculture programs empower residents to grow their own food, develop urban farms, and enhance food access throughout Baltimore. We support urban farmers, community gardens, and local food systems with resources, workshops, and one-on-one support. By providing education on sustainable practices, we are helping residents cultivate fresh, healthy produce right in their communities and combat food insecurity across the city.

2. Health and Nutrition Education
Through our Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed), UME in Baltimore City promotes healthy lifestyles by reaching families and individuals with resources for better health. Our SNAP-Ed program focuses on supporting low-income individuals and families by providing practical education in cooking, nutrition, food budgeting, and physical activity. We work closely with schools, community centers, and local partners to offer SNAP-Ed classes that are accessible and designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices.

Our educators also lead initiatives on food security, making it easier for families to access fresh, nutritious foods. By helping residents understand how to shop smart on a budget, plan meals, and incorporate affordable, healthy ingredients, we aim to reduce health disparities across Baltimore. With a focus on both short-term and long-term behavior changes, our SNAP-Ed and EFNEP programs equip Baltimore’s residents to build healthier habits for life.

3. Youth Development – 4-H Program
The Baltimore City 4-H Youth Development Program fosters leadership, creativity, and resilience among youth in urban settings. Our 4-H educators partner with schools, community centers, and youth organizations to offer hands-on learning in areas like STEM, agriculture, public speaking, and financial literacy. By engaging youth in meaningful projects and leadership development, we aim to build a generation of empowered, community-oriented leaders who are prepared to succeed in the 21st century.

4. Environmental Sustainability and Community Resilience
Our environmental programs provide education on topics such as water quality, urban forestry, waste reduction, and climate resilience. Through workshops, community clean-ups, and collaborative initiatives, we encourage Baltimore residents to adopt sustainable practices that benefit their neighborhoods and the environment. Our Master Gardener program is particularly popular, training community members to create and maintain green spaces, manage urban pests, and increase Baltimore’s urban tree canopy.
