Farmers’ markets are a great place to find local, fresh, and in-season produce. They are also a great spot to get exercise, socialize, and learn about other community resources.
Many markets also accept a variety of benefits - SNAP/EBT, eWIC, Fruit and Vegetable Benefits (FVB), and Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks for seniors and WIC participants. Here are some ways you can make the most of your benefits at the farmers’ market.
Find Your Local Market
Check out this map to find a local farmers’ market, farm stand, or farm. Or search for your favorite market or farm on social media. Most locations will note which benefits they accept.
Some markets participate in matching programs, such as Maryland Market Money. This program matches your benefits, usually up to $10. Find a list of participating markets here.
Know Your Balance
Check the balance on your SNAP or eWIC card online to help budget for your trip. Confirm the number of Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks and their value.
Visit the Information/Market Manager Tent
At a farmers’ market, look for the Information or Market Manager tent. Here they can tell you the following:
- Which benefits are accepted at the farmers’ market
- If they have any matching programs, like Maryland Market Money, to match your benefits
- How you receive your benefits and where you can spend them
- Where to find specific vendors or products
How do I spend my benefits?
Many markets will follow this procedure, but it may be different at your market. Always check at the Information or Market Manager booth first.
SNAP
- Determine the amount you want to spend at the market.
- Slide your card; enter your pin.
- Receive your benefits. Many markets provide your benefits in tokens that can be used throughout the market season. This may not be true for your market, though. Always confirm first.
eWIC
eWIC must be used directly with a farmer. Look for signs that tell you which benefits they accept (like those pictured below).
Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program checks - WIC and Seniors
These checks must be used directly with a farmer.
- Choose your produce/items from the farmer. REMEMBER! You cannot receive change for these, so try to use the full amount.
- Pay directly to the farmer with your check. Be sure to sign it!
- If the farmers’ market participates in a matching program, take your receipt to the Information or Market Manager tent for your matching funds.
Make the Most of Your Benefits
- Know the cost before you buy - look for clearly marked produce, or ask the farmer to assist with selection within your budget
- Check for deals and sales
- Go often, especially if the market matches your benefits
