Internship opportunities are available each term (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and are open for all majors, including, but not limited to: Family Science, Community Health, Public Health Science, and Nutrition and Food Science.
Applying for the Internship
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but we strongly recommend that students follow their respective departments’ deadlines. Typically, students should submit their applications at least two to three months prior to the start of the semester during which they wish to participate in the internship. Students can send the completed application along with their resume or CV, or ask any questions regarding the internship, to Dr. Shauna Henley (shenley@umd.edu).
Internship Structure
Students applying for the internship will be interviewed and matched with a faculty or staff member working in county and regional Extension Offices. Before the start of the semester, student interns will be invited to the UME internship’s ELMS course page.
Through the course page, student interns will engage in various coursework, including:
-
Online modules, including an overview of the University of Maryland Extension program and theories and program planning frameworks used in the public health field.
-
Weekly timesheets
-
Final presentation and a reflection paper
Here are some examples of the final presentation that previous student interns have delivered:
Internship Grading and Policy
You are expected to compete the internship within the time period agreed upon on the internship application, which is ordinarily one semester.
Most students use the internship to fulfill their internship/experiential learning requirements for their majors or programs (e.g., FMSC477), but students can also use the internship to earn academic credits (e.g., independent studies) or just for experience. Although students typically do not receive academic grades directly through the UME internship program, we also have a grading system available for students who wish to earn a letter grade through the internship experience.
Virtual vs. In-Person
While the University of Maryland has re-opened campus and returned to in-person instruction starting in Fall 2021, there may still be many moving parts that are in the transitioning phase. Students should communicate with their departments to make sure they understand the guidelines and/or restrictions for virtual internships. UME internship program has successfully transitioned to 100% virtual internship for the past two semesters (Fall 2020 & Spring 2021). If there are no departmental restrictions for in-person internship, students should communicate with their supervisors to coordinate which format (i.e., in-person, virtual, or both) will work best for both parties.
