MDA's 'Best Native Plants' certification makes it easier for consumers to find native plants
From a consumer's perspective, trying to figure out what's native to Maryland or a particular ecoregion can be confusing and time-consuming. After creating a desired plant palette, availability is frequently an issue, especially for largescale residential and commercial projects. Removing these blockers can lead to a greater variety and abundance of native plants in the landscape; supporting beautiful, resilient, and healthy communities. To support the availability and use of native plants, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) launched the Best Native Plants Certification program April 2025.
Native plants are growing in demand. We want to ensure that Marylanders can easily find retailers who are committed to selling these beneficial plants.
- Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks
How does it work? The Maryland Native Plants Program created an application system for retailers to compare their inventory to the “Commercial Maryland Native Plant List.” Growers and retailers who have at least 20% of their inventory dedicated to plants native to Maryland are encouraged to apply. Once certified, retailers may use the MDA's Best Native Plants logo on plant tags and signage to make it easier for consumers to identify Maryland natives. The three certification tiers - bronze (20-49%), silver (50-74%), and gold (75-100%) - are based on the percentage of Maryland native species compared to the total number of species. Additionally, the number of Maryland species offered is a good indicator of the diversity of species that each retailer sells.
