Evening Meeting Commercial Poultry Growers' Meeting 

October 1, 2024 - 5:30p-8:00p - Denton, MD

In conjunction with the Delmarva Chicken Association’s National Meeting Sept. 30 through Oct 2, we will hold a Poultry Growers’ Meeting on Tuesday evening, from 5:30-8:00 pm, October 1 at the Caroline County 4H Park, 3230 Detour Road, Denton, MD 21629.  

Two speakers that night, Dr. James MacDonald and Dr. Zac Williams, will speak on ‘Packers & Stockyard Rule Updates’ and ‘Litter Management for Salmonella Control’.  

This is a free event, with a very nice, catered BBQ chicken dinner by Chesapeake Culinary Center, who have assured us the chicken will be Halal.

Updated Landowner-Oriented Agricultural Law Online Modules Available To Address Common Concerns

College Park, MD – The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) released an updated online course for rural landowners in Maryland. The So You Want to Own Farmland in Maryland course is available through the University of Maryland’s Enterprise Learning Management System – Canvas.

 The free program will cover those legal issues that Maryland landowners may face. A grant funds the program through the Northeast Risk Management Education Center.  Read more>>

Listening Sessions Scheduled to Seek Public Input on Next Statewide Animal Feeding Operations Permit

Sessions set for Eastern Shore, Western Maryland to hear ideas from the community on permit renewal to be issued next year

BALTIMORE (Sept. 12, 2024) – The Maryland Department of the Environment today announced a series of four listening sessions will be held in Princess Anne, Easton, Frederick and virtually to receive public input on the next version of a statewide general permit that regulates animal feeding operations.  Read more>>

UMES 4-H STEM - Hosts Youth Broiler Chicken Summer Project

A UMES Extension 4-H STEM summer project helped a group of youth experience what raising chickens, a major economic driver on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula, is all about.  

It was an early and odd sort of trunk-or-treat, as Dr. Jennifer Timmons, sat on the back of her car’s hatchback on a sunny afternoon June 4 awaiting youth and their parents to pick up chicks and feed sacks.

It was the first reward for having committed to participating in the inaugural event and attending two meetings providing “expectations of the project, instructions on broiler care and management, and information on biosecurity and animal welfare,” the associate professor of poultry science said. Read and see more pictures >>
