Maryland SNAP-Ed is launching an exciting project linking reading to healthy eating. In late May, students at partnering schools and preschools across the state will be receiving a copy of the book Sylvia’s Spinach by Katherine Pryor.
This book tells the story of how Sylvia grows spinach in her school garden, transforming her feelings about the green veggie from yuck to yum!
Books will be distributed to partnering schools in late May along with a parent guide, and a bookmark directing them to the closest farmers market. Your family can find the book at your local library, book store, or online!
A live online read aloud event with the author will be held on June 9 at 7:00 pm! All are welcome to join the broadcast by visiting go.umd.edu/eat-your-words-kickoff. Questions for the author may be submitted in advance here: go.umd.edu/author-questions
The online event kicks off a summer of fun, with opportunities for families to explore all the freshness Maryland has to offer: at the farmers market, in the garden, and in their kitchens. Follow @eatsmartmd on Facebook for updates on Eat Your Words events at participating farmers markets, summer meal sites, and summer program sites across the state. Social media challenges posted to Facebook and Instagram will give everyone a chance to join in the fun and share their fresh food adventures.
