There is a lot to celebrate this time of year: the changing of the leaves, the harvest season, not to mention a certain candy-filled holiday. If your child’s school is hosting a fall celebration, suggest these tips that include health along with the fun.
 

Trick the Treats

There’s no way around it: kids will be handed plenty of candy on Halloween. Sugary treats don’t need to be the center of every other celebration! Apples are sweet and delicious this time of year and can be used in healthy classroom snacks. If your child’s classroom is having a Halloween or other fall party, suggest making Apple Jack o’ Lanterns, or serving different types of apples with a yogurt dip. Or apples can be the center of a fun learning activity by making Homemade Applesauce (note: you’ll need access to a stove or tabletop burner).
 

Groove into Fall

Kids won’t miss the candy at a class party if the fun comes in other forms. Dancing and active games are great ways to add fun to a fall celebration. Suggest dancing to fall-themed songs, going for a walk to collect colorful leaves, or playing a game of scarecrow tag.

 

Get Crafty

Craft activities are another way to put the focus on fun rather than food. Browse Pinterest for ideas, or suggest making these paper strip apples or pumpkins.

Parents are important advocates and partners in their child’s education. By sharing these ideas, you're helping to reinforce healthy behaviors throughout the school day. Volunteering to help with class parties can help your ideas be heard. If you can, offer to help during the party, send in supplies, or organize other parents to help out.
